The first thing that happened is that it looked boring - so the verticals quickly gained some movement! But I also noticed that, because I started with a set of strips the darkest fabric took centre stage rather than being randomly distributed across the piece. Time for another, very carefully placed cut:
Now the fabric is a little rigidly placed but this seems very crude. However using a carefully chosen palette of like minded fabrics, this could create an interesting background or resting place in a quilt (Colour reuction courtesy of GIMP not the sewing machine!) :
