September TIF

This was finished in the first week of September and is a literal interpretation of some definitions of the word list.

I didn't post it straight away as this piece has generated an idea for creating a piece that has been little more than a glimmer of a thought and i'd hoped to begin work on it. Next month perhaps .......

August TIF

The theme this month was balance, and I was inspired by a diagram from an article linked to in this post - http://sharonb.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/composition-and-the-elements-of-visual-design/ :

It almost seems to sum up of my life :-} The big, almost central, circle being the day job, and the smaller, out on a limb, circle representing the stitching I'd rather be doing! It's all rather strange but since I've had to re-consider my working practice due to changes at work, not working at all seems to have become very desirable!

June TIF

Far from 'finished' this has been fun to make. I took an idea and played with it. When I stopped playing I let it go even though I could have tweaked and re-worked it to achieve a much better result. That would not have been at all playful - it would have been a battle and it seems that there is more to be learned from the play than the battle. I've argued this for many years on behalf of the 7 - 11 year olds that I worked with when I was teaching, so why has it taken so long to apply it to myself??????????????

My camera does NOT like red...

....even though I do!

I spent some time looking at the work of other TIF 'challengees' and was amazed by the variety of the interpretation of the theme 'someone I admire'. It came to me that the common theme in what I admire is strength, people who have inner reserves that they can draw upon. From that came this:

I can't describe the thought process as it just happened in my head! What doesn't show is the fact that the cream is soft, curtain innerlining - a complete contrast to the structure of the piece, or that the black squares are quilted with a floral motif. Just to try to convey that strong doesn't mean hard.

Turnips* - or when a cunning plan falls apart

When I signed up for the TIF challenge, I had it in mind that I would also take part in the QGBI's Contemporary Quilt group's journal quilt challenge. So I made sure that my TIF piece was A4 sized, I've also got another couple of pieces of that size which haven't seen the light - just in case I fell behind. But I think somebody knew, because somebody has decided that this year's challenge won't be A4 it will be 12" x 12". There's a new challenge then .......
